Payments reserve

Shopify Payments reserve? Understand the notice before you respond

A reserve usually means part of payment funds are being held against future risk such as disputes, refunds or chargebacks. The exact percentage, duration and review conditions are case-specific.

Read the reserve terms carefully

Check whether Shopify states a reserve percentage, fixed amount, review date, duration or conditions for reassessment. A reserve is different from a full payout suspension or store termination.

Review the risk signals you can control

  • Chargeback and dispute history.
  • Refund rate and how quickly customer issues are resolved.
  • Fulfillment delays, tracking quality and delivery performance.
  • Large changes in sales volume, average order value or product mix.
  • Consistency between business information, products sold and payment-account details.

Prepare evidence around the stated reason

If the notice links the reserve to fulfillment risk, prepare fulfillment and tracking evidence. If it references chargebacks, document how disputes were handled and what changed to reduce future risk. If Shopify requests business verification, focus on accurate legal and banking records.

A reserve is not automatically evidence that your store violated a rule. Do not admit to issues that are not true. Respond to the facts Shopify actually raised.

Ask the right follow-up question

If the notice is unclear, a useful follow-up is whether there are outstanding documents, what conditions apply to a reserve review, and whether the next review date is automatic or requires a submission.

Check your case before writing

Store Rescue turns the notice into a structured checklist. The free diagnosis identifies the likely case type and visible blocker; the paid report provides a personalized evidence checklist, action plan and draft.
